Kalmar forklifts power ABP Newport's steel handling operation
Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading port operator, now works with four Kalmar 45-tonne forklifts with magnetic attachments and two 33-tonne standard fork trucks at their Newport facility in South Wales. Collaboration with Kalmar has enabled ABP to safely and efficiently handle an increase in steel volumes, while significantly improving operational safety and setting new benchmarks in material handling.
Addressing operational challenges
ABP’s Port of Newport is now handling increased steel volumes, which have been driven by Tata Steel UK's transition to electric arc furnace production in Port Talbot. This transition has temporarily increased the volume from 800,000 tonnes to 3 million tonnes annually. In order to handle such volume safely and efficiently, ABP sought the most advanced equipment in order to carry out the task as safely and efficiently as possible. Kalmar was selected to supply forklifts with magnetic attachments, eliminating the need for manual timber block placement and significantly reducing risk by removing direct interaction between people and equipment. Craig Stephen of ABP highlights the impact of this innovation: "We were able to design a bespoke facility from scratch, incorporating magnets on forklifts to minimise the number of people involved, thereby ensuring the highest level of safety.
Tailored equipment for efficiency and safety
Kalmar supplied ABP with DCG450-12S forklifts featuring magnet attachments and DCG330-12S models equipped with coil booms. These machines were selected not only for their durability and lifting capacity but also for their advanced safety features. These include pedestrian protection systems, 360-degree cameras for enhanced visibility, and Halo safety devices that create a safer working environment for everyone on site. As Craig explains, "We've seen a huge immediate benefit and impact of those machines. They allow us to have denser stacking, and improve safety significantly."

Great driver experience
The feedback from forklift operators has been overwhelmingly positive. Operators praised the intuitive controls, excellent visibility provided by 360-degree cameras, and the straightforward operation of the magnet attachments. Craig notes: "The cab layout is what they like, the safety features are great, and the operation of the magnets is really straightforward. The feedback has been very positive."
ABP’s trust in Kalmar was a key factor in their decision-making process. Craig affirms, "There are cheaper machines out there, but we needed equipment that could stand the test of time. We know that Kalmar provides good quality machines with high-standard maintenance support." Kalmar also supports ABP with a comprehensive maintenance program, including Kalmar fully trained service engineers to ensure optimal performance and minimise downtime.

This partnership demonstrates how tailored solutions, and strong collaboration can drive operational success while setting new standards for safety and efficiency in industrial environments. The implementation of Kalmar's equipment has not only streamlined ABP's operations but has also fostered a safer and more productive work environment for its employees. “It’s been a true success”, Craig concludes.
